The Wizard is a character in Smiling Friends. He appears in "Shmaloogles", serving as the episode's main antagonist.
Appearance[]
The Wizard appears elderly, having dark rings and crow's feet around his bulging eyes, pale skin, bushy eyebrows, and light grey hair including a full, curled beard. His ears are pointed and long, as is his curved beak of a nose. He shows signs of high blood pressure with an ever-present enlarged vein on his temple.
He wears a simple red robe with a pointed, wide-brimmed hat of the same color with a tight spiral at the top. He has claw-like fingernails on his hands as well.
Personality[]
As an antagonist, the Wizard appears deranged and extremely hostile, driven to mad lengths by his insecurity and hesitancy to seek professional help for his problems. He has no qualms brutally killing others, even if simply to keep his issues a secret. When faced with death, his spitefulness and hatred only increased. However, once presented with advocacy and a bit of hope, he calms down shockingly quickly, and became much more level-headed, able to coexist peacefully with others. Even at the height of his rage, he still desired someone to talk to about his insecurities, even if it meant he would kill them after.
History[]
At one point, the Wizard lived near Shmaloogleville in an ominous mountain castle. Discovering he was going bald, he read on a forum that Shmaloogles could be used to cure it. He started capturing them so often that the creatures became indifferent to his raids.
When Charlie and Pim arrive in the village to help the Shmaloogles, the Wizard appears in a draconic form and captures one of the creatures along with Pim (mistaking him for a Shmaloogle despite him not resembling one in any way), taking them to his lair. Pim attempts to protest, but the Wizard magics his mouth shut. Killing and juicing the Shmaloogle, he then realizes his error when Pim does not fit in the juicer, and confides in him about his hair loss. Angrily brushing off Pim's every attempt to dissuade him, and prepares to kill Pim to keep his hair loss a secret. However, Charlie arrives with a Shmaloogle army, offering to call them off if the Wizard gives up Pim. The latter refuses, so Charlie orders a charge. The Wizard obliterates and maims numerous Shmaloogles with magic and crushes two climbers with his bare hands, but an arrow sticks him so he retreats to remove it. This opening allows the army to breach the gate and storm up to his room, tying him down. The Shmaloogle King sentences the wizard to death for his crimes; when asked for any last words, he spitefully orders the king to smile and perform oral sex on him.
Luckily, Pim steps in and explains the wizard's problem, for which Charlie recommends medication that has been helping him with the same thing. Although hesitant due to possible side effects, he acknowledges it's better to at least try something even if it does not work in the end. Instantly forgiven for his rampage, he then joins Charlie, Pim, and the Shmaloogles at Wawa, where he sits quietly with a drink, scrolling on his phone. He reacts with visible concern to the King's accusations of upskirting Princess Shmaloogle, but does not speak up or contribute.
Trivia[]
- As the Shmaloogles are a parody of The Smurfs, the Wizard is likewise a parody of Gargamel, a magician who plots to capture Smurfs for various reasons. Gargamel is also heavily balding.
- Aside from an topical antagonist and source of comedy, the Wizard also serves as a vehicle for approaching the topic of male baldness, encouraging professional help, offering hope, and assuring that there is no need to go to insane lengths to deal with it.
- He was revealed early in an official adult swim post on reddit, although he does not currently have a known name.
- When he reveals his hair loss, the top of his head is (jarringly) rendered realistically, including a prominent pimple.
