Shmaloogles is the seventh episode in Season Three of Smiling Friends.

Synopsis[]

While helping a race of little creatures with a problem, Pim is kidnapped by an evil wizard with a horrid secret. It's up to Charlie to train the creatures and rescue his friend before it's too late.

Adult Swim synopsis[]

Pim, Charlie, and Flint discover a new realm full of wacky characters that you're absolutely gonna love. Although, something happens, and Pim now has his own adventure...huh?

Plot[]

Mr Boss and another man give the boys a new mission - to help out the Shmaloogles over in Shmaloogleville. The two ask who the new mysterious man is and Mr. Boss explains it’s his friend Neil and they plan to watch the Clerks movies together. He invites the two to watch with them and they express mild reluctance to watch the movies with them - even when Neil invited Brian O’Halloran (Dante on Clerks) to join in with them. After a bumpy car ride to the Shmaloogle village, Charlie and Pim are greeted by King Shmaloogle. He showcases the peoples’ favourite pastimes including Shmaloogling, Gloogling, and Woogling, but he tells them that their town has been thrown into chaos ever since their Shmaloogle Machine has gone off the fritz. Charlie pulls Pim aside and expresses a desire to skip this mission due to its saccharine nature, which Pim understands. He then offers to get Pim something from Wawa for lunch and he agrees to a chicken salad wrap.

As soon as Pim starts to help the Shmaloogles though, he and another one of the blue kin get abducted by a demonic entity and are taken to a clearly evil mountain nearby. Shocked, Charlie asks the King what happened and he dismisses it as something that just happens all the time, before celebrating due to the mechanic Shmaloogle managing to fix the machine. In the mountain, the demon reveals himself to be an evil Wizard, who seals Pim’s mouth shut when he reveals he plans to juice the Shmaloogle into his goblet. He does so, then proceeds to attempt to juice Pim, but due to his proportions the machine fails to do so. With his mouth unsealed, Pim explains his mission and asks the wizard why he even needs the Shmaloogles, but before an explanation is made, Charlie is shown getting increasingly fed up with the Shmaloogles’ indifference to Pim and one of their own being captured. Refusing a Shmaloogle shake from Princess Shmaloogle and even destroying the Shmaloogle clock, he curses them out for being useless and too impassive to help their fellow brethren. Most of the Shmaloogles realise that Charlie is right and they should do something about their evil neighbour but begin to infight amongst themselves when other members still express their desire for escapism. Charlie notices and instead encourages them to train and focus their energy on defeating the wizard.

The wizard reveals to Pim the secret behind why he kills the Shmaloogles - he’s going bald and he read on an internet forum via his magic orb that they’re a great way to deal with hair loss. Pim tries to ease his mind and tell him that plenty of people are bald and successful but every attempt he does to try and calm him down is shot down by photoshop edits to prove that baldness is associated with “lower class” people. Pim ultimately agrees that balding isn’t optimal but still tries to get the wizard to stop killing Shmaloogles for hair loss treatment and tries to suggest talking to a specialist, but as he’s insecure of his hair the wizard reveals he’ll never tell anyone, and he’s only telling Pim now because he’s about to kill him. Before he can blast the boy out of existence he’s interrupted by Charlie and the Shmaloogle army. Charlie offers to stop his army if he simply gives up Pim but the wizard refuses, leading to the Shmaloogles to charge at him. Several die in the fight but they eventually restrain the wizard. King Shmaloogle sentences the wizard to death but Pim forces the wizard to confess why he’s hunting the Shmaloogles. Charlie reacts with surprise and tells the wizard he should take minoxidil and whilst the wizard is at first skeptical due to reported side effects, Charlie helps ease his mind by revealing he himself takes it and if it weren’t for it, he’d be completely bald. The wizard agrees to take it, thus ending his Shmaloogle-killing rampage, causing King Shmaloogle to celebrate. They all go to Wawa to celebrate, with Charlie telling Pim that he is a real smiling expert and revealing to him he’s come around to the Shmaloogles and even learned their Shmaloogle dance. The two are interrupted by King Shmaloogle though who accuses Charlie of taking an upskirt photo of Princess Shmaloogle on the staircase. Charlie defends himself from the baseless allegation, revealing that he didn’t even have his phone on him the entire day, stumping the king and he apologises for misinterpreting Charlie’s hand movements. Charlie tells King Shmaloogle that the vibe is ruined.

The post-credits scene reveals that Neil was able to get Brian O’Halloran to watch Clerks with him and Mr Boss. Brian attempts to give behind-the-scenes insight and commentary, though Mr. Boss tells him to keep quiet since he’s trying to watch the scene.

Trivia[]

General[]

  • Similarly to other episodes, the synopsis is misleading as a character named Flint does not appear in the episode.
    • Flint is also mentioned in the synopsis of Season 3.
  • This is the second episode in which Allan and Glep are completely absent, the first was "Charlie, Pim, and Bill vs the Alien."

Cultural references[]

  • The Shmaloogles’ short stature and habits of inserting their name into random things is likely based on The Smurfs.
    • King Shmaloogle resembles Papa Smurf, and Princess Shmaloogle resembles Smurfette.
    • The wizard also serves as a riff on Gargamel, but instead of harvesting the Shmaloogles for food, he does so for a homebrew topical cream to treat hair loss.
    • The Shmaloogles’ enlarged noses and round stature also bear resemblance to the Nerds featured on Nerds Candy.
  • The Shmaloogle holding his severed arm during the attack is reminiscent of a soldier doing the same during Saving Private Ryan’s infamous D-Day scene.
  • The wizard telling King Shmaloogle “smile and blow me” as his last words is based off a leaked audio tape of Mel Gibson verbally abusing his then-partner Oksana Grigorieva.
  • The rumpus room mentioned by Mr. Boss is a parody of the one inside the Simpson household in The Simpsons. The room is infamous for its infrequent appearances throughout the show's 30+ year history.
    • The rumpus room bears a resemblance to James Rolfe's nerd room from his Angry Video Game Nerd web series, sporting a similar couch and a green Rolling Rock analog clock.
  • At the end of the episode, Pim, Charlie, the wizard, and the Shmaloogles go to Wawa, a convenience store chain located on the east coast of the US.
    • This chain was frequented a lot by Zach and many of his Newgrounds friends during their SleepyCabin era, as they, like the cast of Smiling Friends, were based in Philadelphia at the time.
  • During the post-credits scene, to the right of the screen there is a neon-light sign that says "Live Nudes". This is the same one used in the Adam Sandler movie Big Daddy.
