The Renaissance Men are a group of five characters that make their only appearance in "Frowning Friends."
Background[]
The Renaissance Men are first mentioned at the beginning of "Frowning Friends" when Charlie informs Pim that they will be "coming into town". However, the article Charlie reads is extremely vague and provides no details other than their anticipated arrival. The Renaissance Men finally appear at the very end of the episode, where they fire arrows at Grim and Gnarly, killing them, only to leave a second later. Pim then argues that they did not look like they were from the Renaissance era, despite their name.
Appearance[]
The Renaissance Men are a band of five men on horseback, all wearing helmets, chain mail armor, and white mantles with red crosses on them, specifically those worn by the Knights Templar. The leader of the group has a brown beard and mustache and brandishes a goat horn; the other members of the group are clean shaven and wield bows and arrows.
Trivia[]
- Michael and Zach have revealed that the characters were put in last minute as a way to kill Grim and Gnarly at the end of the episode. Grim and Gnarly were originally supposed to die by a falling satellite, but it would've been too obvious of a Chekhov's Gun to do.
- The Renaissance Men were mentioned again in the description of the Smiling Friends Season 2 Trailer, with said description saying "The Renaissance Men are coming. Smiling Friends S2 double-premiere May 12 @ midnight - next day on Max".
- The Renaissance Men appear to wear clothing worn by the Knights Templar as shown by their cross on their mantles, which were active between 1119-1312[2].
- Given that the audience has no other information on who the Renaissance Men are, the five men on horseback may not be them at all. As Pim points out, their clothing is not Renaissance-era; it more closely resembles medieval dress.
