Mr. Boss (or simply The Boss) is the overarching protagonist of Smiling Friends.
He is the head of Smiling Friends Inc. and one of the five main characters. He typically informs his employees about their jobs and clients.
He is voiced by Marc M.
Appearance[]
Body[]
The Boss is tall and slim middle-aged man with an enlarged, jowly, wrinkled head, a big nose, and a very slender body. He has white hair in a horseshoe-shaped pattern typical of balding men, which he covers up poorly with a mismatched greying black toupee. He has four fingers on each hand.
Clothing[]
He wears a navy blue suit, with a white shirt and yellow bow tie.
When gaming, he dons a black and green headset. In the episode "Mr. President," he dons a red-white-and blue patriotic outfit with a hat consisting of the same pattern. In the episode "Frowning Friends," his outfit is shown in disarray and tarnished from his psychopathic tendencies. In the episode, "Erm, the Boss Find Love?" he is shown in the trailer with a white wedding suit on, and near the end of "Pim Finally Turns Green," he's seen donning a wetsuit/bodysuit while surfing.
Personality[]
Mr. Boss is a highly eccentric but very friendly individual. He is polite and casual around his employees, and he seems to genuinely trust and regard them as his friends, often endearingly referring to them as his "boys." He is also very passionate about running his business, as he is always quick to respond to clients regardless of the occasion (though he sometimes plays video games in his office). Much like Charlie and Pim, he also has a knack for making people smile, and seems to be even more skilled at it than his employees when the situation demands it.
In contrast to his genuinely friendly and kind disposition, Mr. Boss tends to engage in very odd behavior and mannerisms, and is strongly implied to have some sort of mental illness. When speaking, he has a habit of switching to a deadpan yet menacing Southern accent out of nowhere seemingly for the sake of making his coworkers mildly uncomfortable. In "Mr. Frog," he is seen walking around the halls while messily eating a plate of spaghetti as opposed to sitting down and eating it, and in "Shrimp's Odyssey," he casually mentions eating some of Allan's worms. In "A Silly Halloween Special," he is shown among the many party-goers who assault the forest demon for "wearing blackface," feasting on one of its severed arms before tossing it into an indoor bonfire made from its brutalized remains. While facing competition from the Frowning Friends, he was driven "bonkers with jealousy", and consulted imaginary versions of Warren Buffett, Mr. Peanut, and Ronald Reagan for business advice. He has some sort of mental breakdown at the end of "Gwimbly: Definitive Remastered Enhanced Extended Edition DX 4K (Anniversary Director’s Cut)," shouting gibberish and flailing around the office break room as if in pain.
Additionally, he has shown symptoms of dissociative identity disorder on multiple occasions. One example is when he was talking to a demonic version of himself in front of a mirror when contemplating how to deal with the Smiling Friends' rival company Frowning Friends, later deciding to murder them. He also claimed that he would go on a shooting spree if President Jimble lost his election, erratically switching from a malevolent to humorous personality before nonchalantly admitting that he would follow through. He also keeps a mysterious manifesto in his desk, the contents of which Charlie read and appeared concerned about. However, Mr. Boss dodged the question. While in Spamtopia, he also demonstrated a somewhat chauvinistic attitude towards other cultures, although he was very quick to abandon these views, going as far as to French kiss their king, Oscar. He also casually planned to shoot Rotten the Snowman in the head as an easy solution to his newfound sentience.
In Season 3, he is sometimes shown to act moreso of an actual boss, as evident with "Squim Returns" and "The Glep Ep", where he threatens and/or questions his employees. He is also shown to be a bit more "ruder", such as with him making an absurd password (i_hate_allan58) for Allan, and him cutting off Brian O'Halloran's dialogue.
Despite his evident insanity, he is also shown to have a strong enough moral center to overcome his urges, quickly snapping out of his homicidal rage when Grim starts crying for mercy. However, he shows mild surprise at Grim's death by the Renaissance Men. Whilst it isn't depicted much in the show, he's endearingly described by Pim as a "horndog," implying that he's a playful womanizer.
Relationships[]
Charlie[]
Mr. Boss is Charlie's employer. They appear to be on fairly good terms, never being shown to quarrel. He even said a few words about him during Charlie’s funeral in "Charlie Dies and Doesn't Come Back." He shows joy when Charlie comes back, claiming it to be a "Christmas Miracle", showing a more positive outlook to him when it comes to Charlie. In “Squim Returns” he’s shown to hate Charlie lying to him about taking a sick day so much that he’s shown uncharacteristically angry at him and threatens to fire him if he’s not into work by noon but later forgives him due to showing his loyalty to Smiling Friends albeit still viewing him as a “lying rat”
Pim[]
Mr. Boss is Pim's employer. It's shown that Mr. Boss has a special level of trust and appreciation for Pim, such as when he recruited him to pick up the firewood for the Halloween bonfire. He was also enthusiastic about their adventure together in "The Magical Red Jewel (aka Tyler Gets Fired)."
Allan[]
Mr. Boss is Allan's employer. They appear to have a sensual supervisor-subordinate relationship, where in “Pim and Charlie Save Mother Nature,” Allan licks cookie crumbs off of Mr. Boss from his lower abdomen to chest, while on vacation. Allan checks up on Mr. Boss of his own accord during his mental break in "Frowning Friends," implying he at least somewhat cares about him. Also in the episode "A Allan Adventure," Mr. Boss is shown to trust Allan enough to task him with getting the paperclips for the office, and presents him with the Mini Mr. Boss figurine at the end. However, Allan subsequently gives to Charlie, which mildly upsets Mr. Boss. Despite this, Allan created rocket boots for Mr. Boss in "Pim Finally Turns Green," which he appreciated Allan greatly for.
Glep[]
Mr. Boss is Glep's employer. They appear to be on good terms, as Glep as shown to personally do multiple complex menial tasks for him including gardening demonic flowers and dressing in a full-size Jared Fogle costume, but this is hard to tell, given the fact that Glep speaks in his own language, never being shown to actually speak coherent english until the end of "Charlie Dies and Doesn't Come Back."
Jason[]
Jason is the Boss's infant-like son, and he is 18 years old. As his father, Mr. Boss treats him with a caring demeanor, and seemingly loves Jason very much. The nature of Jason's origins, and other dynamics of their parent-child relationship, have, so far, been left to speculation. It is unclear who Jason's other parent is, or whether one exists to begin with due to Mr. Boss never explicitly clarifying either option to be the case. Mr. Boss openly breastfeeds Jason in front of his employees. He chastises Jason for biting him, although tenderly.
He is later shown to break down crying after Jason was seemingly killed before bringing him back with his new red jewel.

Trivia[]
- He shares the same name as Mr. Boss from the Cartoon Network series, Codename: Kids Next Door.
- Though all of the other characters refer to him as "Mr. Boss", he is briefly referred to as "Mr. M." by imaginary Warren Buffet. It is possible that M. is the initial for his actual last name, with "Mr. Boss" simply being a nickname.
- It's possible that "Mr. M." could be a reference to the initials of Mr. Boss's voice actor, Marc M.
- It's also possible (by a giant leap of logic) that Mr. Boss' last name could be "Meep", as in Meep boulevard, MeepEats and the Meep foundation. It's unknown who or what "Meep" is, but it could be named after the enigmatically wealthy and philanthropic boss.
- In some up close shots, Mr. Boss has a faded bruise on his forehead.
- This bruise closely resembles the bruise of a baby character in the deleted 2017 psychicpebbles animation "grembloartshow.com" in which a humanoid resembling Mr. Boss breastfeeds his child in a very similar fashion to Mr. Boss during his first scene in "Desmond's Big Day Out."
- This seems to imply that Mr. Boss is the same baby from the animation. as well as being the origin of the breastfeeding concept.
- If Mr. Boss is the same baby from "grembloartshow.com". It could mean that he faced some sort of head trauma at a very young age, which could explain some of his unusual mannerisms and tendencies as an adult.
- According to Zach Hadel and Michael Cusack during the Smiling Friends SDCC 2022 Panel, Mr. Boss was based on John McAfee.
- Mr. Boss' iconic hairstyle is based off of the hairstyle of the boss from Little Helpers - Zach and Mike's initial Adult Swim pitch.
- His nose is a removable accessory, as he uses it to hide two cyanide pills in "The Magical Red Jewel (aka Tyler Gets Fired)."
- When Jason becomes a butterfly, this could have been the effects of the jewel or the jewel is part of its development, since Mr.Boss could have a fake nose, its possible he is a critter like Jason and was a butterfly at some point, as well.
- He owns 1/4 of Hell.
- The episode "Pim and Charlie Save Mother Nature" reveals that Mr. Boss possibly is queer, (similarly to how Allan and Charlie are hinted to as being such). This is revealed when he overtly flirts with Allan, and Allan licks cookie crumbs off of his chest. Additionally, in "The Magical Red Jewel (aka Tyler Gets Fired)," he kisses Oscar on the mouth.
- Mr. Boss could be implied to be transgender, as he has been seen breastfeeding his son Jason in the episode “Desmond’s Big Day Out.”
