The Mole Man is a character in Smiling Friends. He makes his debut in the episode of the same name.
Appearance[]
The mole man’s appearance takes inspiration from the naked mole rat - a tunnelling rodent with, as its name suggests, no hair. He has 2 long front teeth, and 3 toes on each foot. Mole Man also constantly covers his crotch to hide his genitalia from the outside world. His insecurity about his genitalia is a subtle reference to the fact that nobody wants to see a naked mole rat's penis.
Personality[]
Mole Man is an obsessed stalker who initially detested the Smiling Friends due to them invading his territory. However, his hatred turned into obsession when he realised he missed Pim and Charlie’s banter when they went to do work, to the point he stalked them consistently and even tied them up to do a mock Smiling Friends episode.
A lot of his traits seem to be derived from people who obsess over Smiling Friends in real life, such as remarking how “realistic” the duo’s dialogue is, as well as making his own fanfiction scenario where he’s self-inserted as a new Smiling Friend. He also considers Allan and Glep not to be “true” Smiling Friends due to them performing far more menial tasks than the main two and them playing less of a significant role during episodes. It’s likely that much of his behaviour stems from having barely any experience in social interaction, as he dismisses common sense suggestions such as Pim saying he could’ve just said hi to him and Charlie instead of kidnapping them, or Charlie’s suggestion to just wear some clothing to hide his penis. In addition, he also fails to recognise that he made his idols uncomfortable due to the situation he forced them into.
He is incredibly self-conscious about his penis, to the extent that when Charlie merely refused to comment on his genitalia, he turned on them, chasing them around his tunnels while trying to kill them. After Maurine met him and accidentally saw his penis (which she likes), he immediately agrees to marry her, but he still curses out Pim and Charlie. It showed his inability to let go of a grudge whilst cementing how easily swayed he is by affirmation.
Trivia[]
- He is the third character to have the same name as his debut episode, the other two being Mr. Frog and Silly Samuel.
- He actually bares some similarities to Shrimp. Both appear in the third episode episodes of a season. Both are voiced by David Firth. Both are antisocial anthropomorphic animals. And both get together with a human woman voiced by Erica Lindbeck which solves their problems.
