Smiling Friends Wiki

Yeah...

Jason is the 18 year-old son of The Boss. He appears briefly in "Desmond's Big Day Out" and is again seen in "Frowning Friends."

In The Magical Red Jewel (aka Tyler Gets Fired)," he shrieks and enters a chrysalis-like state which Allan and Charlie believe to be death. In reality, he was undergoing metamorphosis, and the Boss's magical red jewel he bought from Mr. Jester is able to bring him out of the chrysalis and transform him into a butterfly (although it's uncertain, it can be assumed that he would have eventually came out of the chrysalis on his own, since the transformation was apparently natural for Jason).

Appearance[]

Body[]

Jason is a pink, bean-shaped critter with closed eyes, a bulging forehead, and bird-like lips (similar to Charlie). He has blue veins on his neck and no visible limbs.

Following his transformation, Jason's body becomes grub-like and gains monarch butterfly wings, six diminutive legs, and insectile antennae. His eyes are now more often kept wide open as opposed to them mostly being closed in his original body. His teeth are sharp, as seen when he lunges toward the camera in a jumpscare.

Clothing[]

Jason wears clothes similar to his father's, donning a black suit, with a white shirt and yellow tie. Following the transformation, he wears no clothes.

Personality[]

Jason is still in a state of infancy despite being 18 years old. As such, his personality is not very developed. When he is still in his larval form and breastfeeds from the Boss, he is calm and accidentally bites his father.

As a butterfly, Jason is much less tender. Immediately after emerging from his chrysalis, Jason began to fly around the room and spread a deep purple fog-like dust, which is shown to be toxic to the employees. He is either unaware or uninterested in the pain he causes. At the very end of the episode, he screams and reveals his terrifying set of teeth when he flies toward the camera.

Background[]

As first shown in the episode Desmond's Big Day Out, Jason is the son of The Boss. Not much else is known about his origins, although it is likely that he is a critter based on his inhuman physical appearance. Mr. Boss has made no references to an ex-spouse, and it is unclear who Jason's other parent is, or whether a second parent exists to begin with. It is possible that Mr. Boss is Jason's only parent, and may have mothered Jason or reproduced asexually somehow, but this is purely speculation.

Relationships[]

The Boss[]

The Boss is the father of Jason. He is shown to deeply love and care for his son, keeping him on his work desk at all times and openly breastfeeding him in front of his employees. As well as breaking down in sadness and shock at his apparent death. However, the Boss is still negatively affected by Jason's fairy dust.

Trivia[]

  • The breastfeeding scene was inspired by Zach Hadel's (psychicpebbles) video that contained similar looking characters to The Boss and Jason. The baby character in that video had a bruise on its head similar to the one seen on The Boss, which has led some to speculate that these characters are The Boss as a baby with his own father. Also, the Boss's precursor has Charlie's voice.
  • Jason's name is possibly a reference to Jason Friedberg, co-director of parody films such as "Epic Movie" and "Meet the Spartans". This was lifted from the Oneyplays Spider-Man 2 series, where Zach, Chris and Lyle discuss their distaste for his films and ultimately create a bit in which Jason Friedberg is depicted as a drooling, crying man-child. The line "Jason you're like 35 years old" is even similar to Mr Boss calling Jason "my 18 year old son Jason".
  • Oddly enough, despite Jason being his son, The Boss was apparently unaware that his son was (or could) turning into a butterfly and like Charlie and Allan, he believed that he had died initially during the metamorphosis. Although, he soon seems to realize what's happening and uses the red jewel to help him through it. It's possible that the Boss just forgot that it was going to happen, which isn't entirely unbelievable given the Boss's personality.
