"Pim, what is this?" This article is a stub. You can help the Smiling Friends Wiki by expanding it. Thank you! |
Grimothy "Grim" Gromble[1] and Gnarly Skipleg[1] were the main antagonists of the episode "Frowning Friends," and the core employees of Frowning Friends Inc. Grim is short, greyish pink, and has three (presumed) exposed nerve endings on his head. Gnarly is tall and thin, with sickly yellow skin, and has a full head of scraggly hair with a matching, unkempt beard on his chin. Both wear black leather jackets with off-white shirts underneath, blue jeans and dark grey shoes. They are ploys to Pim and Charlie, respectively, often being mistaken for them due to their somewhat similar appearances.
Grim and Gnarly directly coordinated, finding out where and when Charlie and Pim would try and help make someone smile, and get to them first, making their clients feel insecure and incapable of being happy or achieving their goals. Grim is also shown to be racist against Puerto Ricans, wanting to eradicate them from the planet. When Mr. Boss congratulated Grim on his business driving Boss to near-insanity, it was the first time he and Gnarly had smiled. Shortly after, The Renaissance Men arrived and shot both of them dead with arrows before promptly leaving.
Appearance[]
Grim has an appearance similar to that of Pim. He has a slightly darker pink skin tone then Pim. He wears a dark brown jacket with a white t-shirt. He wears jeans which have a small rip on his right leg. He has gray, featureless shoes. He has 3 hairs, or exposed nerve endings, on his head, unlike Pim, which only has 1. He is almost always has a downcast, angry expression, except when he is reenacting his plan to make everyone frown to everybody.
Gnarly is, like Grim, the opposite of the 2 Smiling Friends. Taking the semi-appearance of Charlie, he has an uncountable amount of hairs, a triangular nose, and a small goatee. He wears a dark grey overcoat, a white t-shirt, a belt, pants which are similar to those of Grim, and dark grey shoes. He is a light-green in color.
Personality[]
Grim is also shown to be extremely racist, as he initially planned to enact genocide on Puerto Ricans. Gnarly is, like Grim, also very mean to people.
They are also quite hypocritical as while they make a living making others feel negative, they themselves aren't big on feeling it themselves. It's this hypocrisy that leads to their defeat.
Role in episode[]
After hearing a noise, Pim and Charlie head outside to see that a new business called the Frowning Friends has opened up across the street, run by Grim and Gnarly; two outwardly evil versions of Pim and Charlie, who proceed to make fun of them. Dismayed, Pim interrupts The Boss' DDR session and tells him about the new business, and despite the visible distress on his face, he reassures the two that this is just friendly competition (he later plans to assassinate them). Now invigorated to make people smile due to the competition, Pim rushes out and Charlie soon follows.
The first person they encounter is a Soundcloud rapper and gangster called DJ Spit, who is upset that nobody wants to listen to his music. When Pim tries to encourage him to keep making his music so he can improve and find an audience DJ Spit says he recognizes the both of them as Grim and Gnarly, believing they just told him to give up on his dreams earlier. Charlie tries to clarify that those were the Frowning Friends and not themselves, but DJ Spit accuses the two of trying to gaslight him before pulling a gun on them. The two then visit Mr. Man, who is upset about how the shape of his head causes him constant mental anguish. Pim tries to tell him that his head looks good, but Mr. Man also mistakes Pim and Charlie as Grim and Gnarly, who told him to feel bad about his dented head, before again accusing the two of gaslighting him. Charlie and Pim take a break, with the former acknowledging how the Frowning Friends are the "Bizarro" versions of them, but is confused by what their end goal is. The two try and help one last person, 3D Squelton, who is upset about the world's injustices. Charlie asks if he enjoys doing anything, to which Squelton says he likes balloons, with both of the friends suggesting he could become a balloon salesman. Just as he's convinced however, Grim and Gnarly leave from a helicopter and tell Squelton to consider the time effort it would take to get a license, and also that it doesn't matter anyway because he will eventually die. Gnarly also mentions how the world is running out of helium for balloons, and the world's helium supply will be completely depleted within 15-20 years. Grim argues that the Frowning Friends only tell the truth, even when it hurts, before giving 3D Squelton their number and leaving in the helicopter.
Pim and Charlie head back to Smiling Friends Inc. headquarters and find a crowd listening to Grim's propaganda. When Pim calls him out, Grim accuses Pim of bullying a mentally ill person, causing the two to be arrested by Alan and Glep, who joined solely for a better 401(k). Grim then shows the crowd the "brutal cruelties of reality," showing off footage of war and homeless people, to which Charlie is unamused, claiming that he's seen way worse stuff on the internet. Afterwards, Grim delivers a speech revealing his master plan to eradicate smiling and Puerto Ricans. The Boss suddenly barges onto the balcony and points his rifle at Grim, prompting him to beg profusely for his life and piss his pants. DJ Spit points out how Grim spouted nothing but nihilism but was afraid to be killed when Mr. Boss showed up, to which the crowd angrily disperses, with Mr. Man stating he was looking forward to the genocide on the Puerto Ricans.
The Boss tries cheering Grim up by letting him know the only reason why he almost killed him was because he was jealous of Grim's idea, causing him to smile. Grim and Gnarly start to enjoy smiling and begin to change their ways, but a bunch of medieval cavalrymen appear and shoot arrows into Grim and Gnarly, killing them instantly before leaving.
Trivia[]
