—Doug, "Brother's Egg"

Douglas "Doug" Psychotic is a character in Smiling Friends who appears in "Brother's Egg." He is the older brother of Professor Psychotic, with whom he had a strained relationship.

Appearance[]

Doug is a tall, rotoscoped, caucasian human with a stubble beard and short, brown hair.

He typically wears a blue hoodie and cap, as well as red shorts and orange slide sandals.

Personality[]

Doug is a rather irritable person, often snapping at others over simple things, such as his brother being too loud or Pim suggesting he should give his brother another chance. His behavior is worsened by the stress of working 14 hours a day, combined with an addiction to painkillers. Although the rift between him and his brother worsened at the death of their mother and the resulting funeral, it's implied that he was abusing painkillers prior to her death, which he began to take either due to Professor Psychotic's developing obsession with creating life or their mother's deteriorating health.

However, once Professor Psychotic's experiment was proven to be a success, he changes his tune and realizes that he should be more supportive of his younger brother's ambitions, vowing to help raise the life he created in spite of their differences.

Trivia[]

  • Doug is guest animated by Joel Haver (who also models and voices him), utilizing his unique rotoscoping technique with the use of a free ebsynth plug-in to cheaply render the in-between frames on the live action model. The plug-in has many limitations and frequent digital animation clipping, which has become a staple of Haver’s style. During the climactic fight, both Doug and his brother are animated with the same technique.
  • Doug, Professor Psychotic (during the climactic fight sequence and hug in "Brother's Egg") and Party Bro, are the only characters in Smiling Friends who are animated using the rotoscope process.
    • Doug is the only character to be consistently rotoscoped, though. Professor Psychotic is only rotoscoped in the fight sequence, and Party Bro is animated in the show's usual style during a brief moment in "A Silly Halloween Special."
